Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement

* J-42129 - Wheel Hub Remover
Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
3. Disconnect the electrical connector for the speed control sensor.
4. Insert a punch or drift (2) in the cooling fins of the brake rotor.
5. Rotate the brake rotor until the punch or drift (2) is resting against the brake caliper mounting bracket.
6. Using the proper size socket and a breaker bar (1), loosen the wheel drive shaft nut.
7. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut (1).
8. Remove the punch or drift from the brake rotor.
9. Using the J-42129 - remover (2), separate the wheel drive shaft from the wheel hub/bearing (1).
10. Remove the J-42129 - remover (2).
11. Remove the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.
12. Remove the stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement Front Suspension.
13. Separate the lower control arm from the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement Service and Repair.
14. Using a large flat bladed tool (2), remove the wheel drive shaft.
Note:
* It may be necessary to have an assistant hold the knuckle assembly while removing the wheel drive shaft.
* If removing the wheel drive shaft to service other suspension or drive line components, use care when removing or installing the wheel drive shaft so as not to damage the wheel drive shaft boots.
15. Remove the wheel drive shaft (1) from the vehicle.
16. Remove and discard the washer (1) from the wheel drive staff. DO NOT re-use the washer, replace with NEW only.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the DT-44394-A - protector (1) into the differential.
2. Install the wheel drive shaft (1) into the differential.
3. Remove the DT-44394-A - protector (1) into the differential.
4. Install the NEW washer (1) on the wheel drive shaft (2).
5. Install the lower control arm in the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement Service and Repair.
6. Install the stabilizer shaft link in the lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement Front Suspension.
7. Install the outer tie rod end in the steering knuckle. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.
8. Hand start the NEW wheel drive shaft nut (1).
9. Insert a drift or punch (2) in the cooling fins of the brake rotor.
10. Rotate the brake rotor until the drift or punch (2) contacts the brake caliper mounting bracket.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
11. Using a torque wrench (1) and the proper size socket, tighten the wheel drive shaft nut to 210 Nm (155 lb ft).
12. Remove the punch or drift (2) from the brake rotor.
13. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
14. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
