Steering Gear Boot Replacement

DT-35910 - Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools Tools and Equipment.

Removal Procedure

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

2. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.

3. If equipped, remove the steering gear heat shield. Refer to Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement (NJ0 or NJ1) Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement (NJ0 or NJ1)Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement (NV7, NXB, NXC, or N40) Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement (NV7, NXB, NXC, or N40).





4. Remove the steering linkage inner tie rod nut (5) from the steering linkage inner tie rod.

5. Remove the steering gear boot outer clamp (4).

6. Cut the steering gear boot inner clamp (2).

Discard the inner clamp.

7. Remove the steering gear boot (3) from the steering gear (1).

8. Inspect the inner tie rod for evidence of corrosion or contamination. If none is evident, continue with the repair. If corrosion or contamination is evident, replace the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement (NJ0 or NJ1) Steering Gear Replacement (NJ0 or NJ1)Steering Gear Replacement (NV7, NXB, NXC, or N40) Steering Gear Replacement (NV7, NXB, NXC, or N40).

Installation Procedure





1. Install the steering gear boot (3) to the steering linkage inner tie rod.

2. Install the NEW steering gear boot inner clamp (2) to the steering gear boot.

3. Install the steering gear boot to the steering gear (1). Ensure the steering gear boot is seated in the assembly groove of the steering gear.

4. Use the DT-35910 - pliersin order to crimp the steering gear boot inner clamp.





5. Install the steering gear boot outer clamp (1).

6. Install the steering linkage inner tie rod nut (2).

7. If equipped, install the steering gear heat shield. Refer to Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement (NJ0 or NJ1) Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement (NJ0 or NJ1)Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement (NV7, NXB, NXC, or N40) Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement (NV7, NXB, NXC, or N40).

8. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.

9. Lower the vehicle.
