DTC Descriptor

DTC P0119
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit Intermittent

Circuit/System Description

The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is a variable resistor that measures the temperature of the engine coolant. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the ECT sensor signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit. The ECM monitors the performance of the ECT sensor. If the ECM detects excessive noise fluctuations in the ECT signal, this DTC sets.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* DTCs P0117 or P0118 are not set.

* The ignition is ON or the engine is running.

* This DTC runs continuously within the enabling conditions.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects that the signal step change is greater than the high limit.

or

The ECM detects that the signal step change is less than the low limit.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* DTC P0119 is a Type B DTC.

* The cooling fans will be commanded ON.

* The A/C compressor will be commanded OFF.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0119 is a Type B DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Verify that DTC P0117 or P0118 are not set.

If any of the DTCs are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle.

2. Observe the scan tool ECT Sensor parameter, while moving the ECT Sensor connector and the K20 ECM connector. The ECT Sensor parameter should not fluctuate while moving the related harnesses and connectors.

If the reading changes abruptly, repair the wiring harness or the harness connectors.

3. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.
