DTC Descriptors

DTC P2070
- Intake Manifold Tuning Control Valve Stuck Open

DTC P2071
- Intake Manifold Tuning Control Valve Stuck Closed

Circuit/System Description

An intake manifold tuning valve is used to change the intake manifold plenum configuration. When the intake manifold tuning valve is open, the intake manifold is configured to one large plenum. When the intake manifold tuning valve is closed, the intake manifold is configured to two smaller plenums. The intake manifold tuning valve improves engine performance at low and high engine speeds.

Ignition voltage is supplied directly to the intake manifold tuning valve solenoid. The engine control module (ECM) controls the solenoid by grounding the control circuit with a solid state device called a driver. The driver is equipped with a feedback circuit that is pulled up to a voltage. The ECM can determine if the control circuit is open, shorted to ground, or shorted to a voltage by monitoring the feedback voltage.

The intake manifold tuning valve also contains a position sensor which is used to detect the actual position of the intake manifold tuning valve in relation to its commanded position. The ECM supplies the intake manifold tuning valve position sensor with a 5 V signal circuit and the position sensor uses a common ground circuit. The position sensor enables the ECM to detect a physically broken or stuck intake manifold tuning valve.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* DTCs P0660, P2077 or P2078 are not set.

* The DTCs run continuously when the above condition is met for greater than 4 s.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P2070

The ECM detects that the intake manifold tuning valve is stuck in the open position after being commanded closed for greater than 5 s.

P2071

The ECM detects that the intake manifold tuning valve is stuck in the closed position after being commanded open for greater than 5 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P2070 and P2071 is a Type B DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P2070 and P2071 is a Type B DTC.

Diagnostic Aids

* Ignition ON, command the Intake Manifold Tuning Solenoid Valve ON and OFF with a scan tool and observe if anything interferes with the motion.

* If the condition is intermittent, move the related harnesses and connectors, with the engine operating, while monitoring the scan tool circuit test status parameters for the component. A circuit test status parameter will change from OK or Not Run to Malfunction if there is a condition with the circuit or a connection.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool DTC information. Verify that DTCs P0660, P2076, P2077, or P2078 are not set.

If any of the DTCs are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle.

2. Command the Intake Manifold Tuning Valve Closed with a scan tool. The intake manifold tuning valve actuator should move to the closed position.

3. Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTC P2070, or P2071 should not be set.

4. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Inspect the linkage between the Q22 Intake Manifold Tuning Solenoid Valve and the valve at the intake manifold for the conditions listed below:

* Linkage for being connected

* Linkage binding

* Interference with hoses, wiring, or any other components

If a condition is found, repair as necessary.

2. Remove the linkage from the Q22 Intake Manifold Tuning Solenoid Valve.

3. Ignition ON, disconnect the harness connector at the Q22 Intake Manifold Tuning Solenoid Valve and then reconnect. The Q22 Intake Manifold Tuning Solenoid Valve should move. Repeat procedure several times.

If the solenoid did not move, replace the intake manifold.

4. Inspect the inside of the intake manifold for the following conditions:

* Carbon build-up that limits the movement of the Q22 Intake Manifold Tuning Solenoid Valve.

* Casting flash that limits the movement of the Q22 Intake Manifold Tuning Solenoid Valve.

* Foreign material that limits the movement of the Q22 Intake Manifold Tuning Solenoid Valve.

If a condition is found, repair as necessary.

5. If all components test normal, clean or replace the intake manifold.
