DTC Descriptors

DTC P0218

-
Transmission Fluid Overtemperature

Circuit/System Description

The transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor is a 2 wire negative coefficient thermistor that measures the temperature of the transmission fluid. The engine control module (ECM) supplies a signal circuit and a low reference circuit to the TFT sensor. This diagnostic does not detect a malfunction of the TFT circuitry, it simply alerts the vehicle operator to a high transmission fluid temperature, which could lead to transmission damage.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* The ignition voltage is 8.6 V or greater.

* The engine speed is 1,000 RPM or greater for 7 seconds.

* The transmission fluid is between -39°C (-38°F) and 162°C (323°) for 10 seconds.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The TFT is greater than 163°C (325°F) for 10 minutes.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* DTC P0218 is a Type C DTC.

* A transmission fluid hot message appears in the Driver Information Center.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0218 is a Type C DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

Note:
If DTC P0712 or P0713 is set, diagnose those DTCs first.

1. Inspect for any external transmission leakage. Refer to Transmission Fluid Leak Diagnosis Transmission Fluid Leak Diagnosis.

2. Verify the transmission has the correct fluid and the fluid is at the correct level. Refer to Lubrication Specifications Lubrication Specifications and Transmission Fluid Level Inspection Tremec 6-Speed - Manual Transmission.

3. Inspect vehicle for modifications or aftermarket performance equipment.

4. Review with the vehicle operator their driving habits or vehicle operation.

5. After performing the above steps, then operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data. If the vehicle passes the Circuit/System Verification procedure then, refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections.
