DTC Descriptor

DTC P0016

-
Crankshaft Position (CKP) - Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation

Circuit/System Description

The engine control module (ECM) uses the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor and the camshaft position (CMP) sensor pulses to monitor the correlation between the crankshaft and the camshaft position. The CKP sensor works in conjunction with a 58X reluctor wheel that is attached to the crankshaft. Each tooth on the reluctor wheel is spaced 6 degrees apart with one span having a 12 degree space. The ECM uses the 12 degree space to determine top dead center (TDC) for cylinders 1 and 6. The camshaft reluctor wheel has 4 teeth, 2 narrow, and 2 wide. The 4 trailing edges of each tooth are evenly spaced at 90 degrees apart around the circumference of the camshaft sprocket. With the engine running, and the CMP actuator in the parked position - if equipped, the ECM expects the camshaft signal pulses to occur 36 crankshaft degrees before top dead center (BTDC) for cylinder number 1, and every 90 degrees thereafter.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* DTC P0335, P0336, P0340, P0341, P0641, or P0651 is not set.

* The engine is running.

* The engine speed is less than 2,000 RPM.

* DTC P0016 runs continuously when the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects that the CMP sensor pulses occur more than 11 crank degrees before, or 11 crank degrees after, nominal position for 24 out of 30 engine cycles.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0016 is a Type B DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0016 is a Type B DTC.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Idle the engine at normal operating temperature. Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. DTC P0016 should not set.

If a DTC sets, inspect for the following and repair as necessary:

* The correct installation of the camshaft sensor

* The correct installation of the crankshaft sensor

* A timing chain tensioner condition

* An incorrectly installed timing chain

* Excessive play in the timing chain or sprockets

* A timing chain that jumped teeth

2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Repair Instructions
