Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement (J57)

Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement (J57)

Removal Procedure

Warning:
Refer to Brake Dust Warning Brake Dust Warning.

1. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.

2. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed before proceeding.

3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.

4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

Caution:
Disc brake rotor protectors MUST be installed prior to tire and wheel assembly removal to avoid ceramic brake rotor damage due to contact between the tire and wheel assembly and the rotor. If the ceramic brake rotor is damaged replacement may be required.

5. Install the disc brake rotor protectors and remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Removal and Replacement.

6. Disconnect the disc brake pad wear sensor electrical connector (1).

7. Release the disc brake pad wear sensor electrical connector from the bracket.

8. Remove the upper disc brake pad guide pin (1).

9. Remove the disc brake pad retaining spring (1).

10. Remove the lower disc brake pad guide pin (1).

11. Remove the inner disc brake pad and wear sensor assembly (1).

12. Remove the outer disc brake pad (2).

13. Using a spreader tool, compress the brake caliper pistons into the brake caliper bores.

14. Inspect the brake caliper for brake fluid leakage, damage to the dust boots and pistons and replace, if necessary. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Overhaul (J56, J57) Rear Brake Caliper Overhaul (J56, J57)Rear Brake Caliper Overhaul (JL9, J55) Rear Brake Caliper Overhaul (JL9, J55).

Note:
The brake rotor must be removed and thoroughly inspected each time the disc brake pads are replaced.

15. Remove the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J57) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (J57)Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JL9, J55, J56) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JL9, J55, J56).

16. Perform the Brake Rotor Thickness Measurement (JL9, J55, J56) Brake Rotor Thickness Measurement (JL9, J55, J56)Brake Rotor Thickness Measurement (J57) Brake Rotor Thickness Measurement (J57).

Installation Procedure

1. Install the inner disc brake pad and wear sensor assembly (1).

2. Install the outer disc brake pad (2).

3. Install the lower disc brake pad guide pin (1).

4. Install the disc brake pad retaining spring (1).

5. Install the upper disc brake pad guide pin (1).

6. Connect the disc brake pad wear sensor electrical connector (1).

7. Install the disc brake pad wear sensor electrical connector to the bracket.

8. Install the disc brake pad wear sensor to the inboard disc brake pad and the brake caliper.

Ensure to allow for the increased distance from the wire harness brake caliper mounting point and the disc brake pad as the brake pad wears.

9. Install the tire and wheel assembly and remove the disc brake rotor protectors. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Removal and Replacement.

10. Burnish the brake pads and rotors. Refer to Brake Pad and Rotor Burnishing (J57) Brake Pad and Rotor Burnishing (J57)Brake Pad and Rotor Burnishing (JL9, J55, J56) Brake Pad and Rotor Burnishing (JL9, J55, J56).
