Front Suspension

Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution:
The Front and Rear Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensors are not interchangeable. When you are replacing a Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor be sure to use the correct Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor part number. Do not mount the Rear Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor in the front steering knuckle. The Rear Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor features a splined hole through the center of the bearing which mates to the drive axle. The Rear Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor requires the support of the drive axle and the drive axle nut clamped joint to properly carry the vehicle loads. Mounting the Rear Wheel Hub/Wheel Speed Sensor in the front steering knuckle can cause bearing failure and possible damage to the vehicle.

1. Remove the steering knuckle assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement Service and Repair.

Note: For the ZR1 (RPO SSC) vehicles, identify the short lower fastener (black coated) used to mount the rear wheel bearing to knuckle. This fastener must be used in this location in order to have enough clearance so that the wheel stud will not come in contact with this fastener.

2. Remove the wheel hub and bearing bolts (1).

3. Remove the wheel hub and bearing assembly (1) from the steering knuckle.

4. Remove the wheel speed sensor harness mounting plate (1).

Installation Procedure

1. Install the wheel speed sensor harness mounting plate (1).

2. Install the wheel hub and bearing assembly (1) to the steering knuckle.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

Note: Install the short black bolt in the same location as noted during removal.

3. Install the wheel hub and bearing bolts (1) and tighten to 130 Nm (96 lb ft).

4. Install the steering knuckle assembly to the vehicle. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement Service and Repair.
