Ring Gear and Differential Housing Disassemble
Ring Gear and Differential Housing Disassemble
Special Tools
* J 8433 - Two Jaw Puller
* J-42159-A - Differential Side Bearing Remover
* J 42162 - Getrag Axle Side Gear Compressor
* J 42173 - Getrag Axle Ring Gear Holder
1. Position the differential case assembly onto the J 42173 - Getrag Axle Ring Gear Holder.
2. Remove the ring gear bolts (2) and ring gear (1).
3. Discard the ring gear bolts (2).
4. Install the J-42159-A - Differential Side Bearing Remover (3) onto the right differential side bearing.
5. Using the J-42159-A - Differential Side Bearing Remover (3), the J 42162 - Getrag Axle Side Gear Compressor (2), and the J 8433 - Two Jaw Puller (1), remove the right side bearing from the differential.
6. Remove the differential case bolts.
7. Separate the case halves, right and left.
8. Remove the left output shaft and gear from the left case.
Important: Friction discs and separator plates develop specific wear patterns and are a matched set. During disc and plate removal, the components must be retained in the specific order in which they were removed.
9. Remove the left clutch pack from the left case.
* Remove the separator plates (1).
* Remove the friction discs (2).
* Remove the bellville washer (3).
10. Tag the clutch pack to indicate the position of the components.
11. Install the J-42159-A - Differential Side Bearing Remover (3) onto the left differential side bearing.
12. Using the J-42159-A - Differential Side Bearing Remover (3), the J 42162 - Getrag Axle Side Gear Compressor (2), and the J 8433 - Two Jaw Puller (1) or a hydraulic press, remove the left side bearing from the differential.
13. Remove the C-clip from the left output shaft.
14. Remove the gear from the left output shaft.
15. Using the J 42162 - Getrag Axle Side Gear Compressor and a hydraulic press, compress the bellville washer and clutch pack in order to remove the cross pin from the right differential case.
16. Remove the right side gears (1), side gear washers (2), and output shaft and gear (3) from the right differential case.
17. Remove the output shaft retaining ring (4) and output shaft (6) from the right output side gear (5), if equipped.
Important: Friction discs and separator plates develop specific wear patterns and are a matched set. During disc and plate removal, the components must be retained in the specific order in which they were removed.
18. Remove the right clutch pack from the right case.
* Remove the bellville washer (1).
* Remove the friction discs (2).
* Remove the separator plates (3).
19. Tag the clutch pack to indicate the position of the components.
