Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The body control module (BCM) provides a 12 V signal to each door ajar switch signal circuits. When a door is opened, the normally open ajar switch closes. With the ajar switch closed, a ground path is provided to the ajar switch signal circuit. The BCM interprets this and communicates via serial data with the instrument panel cluster to display the door ajar icon.

Circuit/System Verification

Ignition ON, with all doors closed, observe the scan tool Driver Door Ajar Sw, LR Door Ajar Sw, Passenger Door Ajar Sw, and Right Rear Door Ajar Sw parameters while opening and closing each door. The parameters should change between Door Closed and Door Ajar.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate door lock.

2. Test for less than 1 ohms between ground circuit terminal listed below and ground:

* Driver door lock ground circuit terminal 6 (Without UA6).

* Driver door lock ground circuit terminal 8 (With UA6).

* Passenger door lock ground circuit terminal 3.

* Right rear door lock ground circuit terminal 3.

* Left rear door lock ground circuit terminal 6.

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Door Ajar Sw parameter is Door Closed.

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal listed below for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

* Driver door lock signal circuit terminal 6 (With UA6).

* Driver door lock signal circuit terminal 4 (Without UA6).

* Passenger door lock signal circuit terminal 1.

* Right rear door lock signal circuit terminal 1.

* Left rear door lock signal circuit terminal 4.

4. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal below and ground. Verify the scan tool Door Ajar Switch parameter is Door Ajar.

* Driver door lock signal circuit terminal 6 (With UA6).

* Driver door lock signal circuit terminal 4 (Without UA6).

* Passenger door lock signal circuit terminal 1.

* Right rear door lock signal circuit terminal 1.

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the door lock.

Component Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate door lock.

2. With the switch in the open position, test for infinite resistance between the signal terminal and the ground terminal listed below:

* Driver door lock signal terminal 6 and ground terminal 8 (With UA6).

* Driver door lock signal terminal 4 and ground terminal 6 (Without UA6).

* Passenger door lock signal terminal 1 and ground terminal 3.

* Right rear door lock signal terminal 1 and ground terminal 3.

* Left rear door lock signal terminal 4 and ground terminal 6.

If not the specified value, replace the door lock.

3. With the switch in the closed position, test for less than 3 ohms between the signal and the ground terminals listed below:

* Driver door lock signal terminal 6 and ground terminal 8 (With UA6).

* Driver door lock signal terminal 4 and ground terminal 6 (Without UA6).

* Passenger door lock signal terminal 1 and ground terminal 3.

* Right rear door lock signal terminal 1 and ground terminal 3.

* Left rear door lock signal terminal 4 and ground terminal 6.

If greater than the specified range, replace the door lock.
