The 1988 7.4L engine has incorporated some changes which include a new design piston and a 4 bolt main crankshaft. For 1988 models or prior model years, on vehicles which are subject to heavy duty applications (such as motorhome chassis) it is recommended the 4 bolt design engine be used when a replacement engine is required. The 1988 7.4L partial engine assembly is completely interchangeable with the 7.4L engines for previous model years.
