Subject: SPECIAL POLICY ADJUSTMENT GREASEABLE UPPER AND LOWER CONTROL ARM BALL JOINTS AND FRONT END ALIGNMENT KIT 1988-90 C/K 1500-3500 SERIES
TRUCKS (REVISED)
With the introduction of the 1988 C/K truck, Chevrolet provided a truck with modern styling, improved comfort, operator convenience and advanced technological features. Continuing refinements have taken a great truck and have made it even better. Customer acceptance has placed, as of June 20, 1991, the C/K in the position of being the 1991 full size truck sales leader. Our efforts are continuing to maintain and strengthen this leadership position.
Chevrolet Motor Division announced, in August of 1990, a Special Policy Adjustment on 1988 - 1990 C/K Series Truck Ball Joints and Front End Alignment Kits. This policy was intended to maintain customer confidence and to address customer complaints regarding C/K truck ball joint problems. Since the release of the Special Policy, the results of stringent lab tests, proving grounds durability tests and fleet field tests have demonstrated the durability of the 1990 C/K truck maintenance-free ball joints. These tests have also confirmed that caster/camber alignment is only required due to accident or road hazard damage.
As a result of data currently available, effective August 5, 1991, the Special Policy Adjustment previously released is being revised. The revisions include a required check of the condition of the 1990 model year C/K truck maintenance free ball joints prior to replacement, elimination of caster/camber time allowances and the addition of toe in alignment upon customer request.
The Special Policy Adjustment coverage on the specified components continues for 5 years and/or 100,000 miles from the vehicle purchase date. Owners of all vehicles involved in this Special Policy Adjustment were previously notified by Chevrolet Motor Division. No additional notification will be made. Specific details of the Special Policy Adjustment are contained in the attached Dealer Service Bulletin and should be filed in the Special Policy Adjustment binder previously furnished to you.
In addition Chevrolet recently developed a video with details explaining the 1988 - 1991 C/K trucks front suspension and steering systems. The video titled "C/K Truck Front End Serviceability" will be mailed to you under separate cover for review with your service and sales personnel.
I ask that you communicate this information to your Service Manager and other employees involved in the administration of this Special Policy Adjustment. Working together, we can keep our C/K truck in its position of being the leader in 1991 full size pickup sales.
