Intermediate Clutch Piston
DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove oil rings (653) from center support.
2. Press in on spring retainer and remove snap ring.
3. Remove spring retainer with three clutch release springs.
4. Remove spring guide and clutch piston.
5. Remove inner and outer seals from clutch piston. Do not remove three screws holding holding roller clutch race to center support.
INSPECTION
1. Inspect roller clutch race inside center support for scratches wear or damage.
2. Inspect center support for cracks or damaged lugs.
3. Inspect oil rings and ring grooves for damage, burrs or cuts.
4. Air check oil passages.
5. Inspect intermediate clutch piston for cracks or damage.
6. inspect sealing surfaces and seal grooves for scratches or other damage.
7. Inspect springs for collapsed coils or distortion.
8. Ensure constant bleed orifice is open approximately 0.020 inch.
9. Inspect bushing for scoring, wear or galling. If replacement is necessary, proceed as follows:
a. Using tools J-21465-6 and J-8092, or equivalents, remove bushing.
b. From front side of center support, align elongated slot in bushing wit drill hole in oil delivery sleeve closest to piston.
c. Using tools J-21465-6 and J-8092, or equivalents, drive bushing squarely into bore until bushing is flush to 0.010 inch below top of oil delivery sleeve.
ASSEMBLY
1. Lubricate new inner and outer clutch piston seals and grooves with transmission fluid.
2. Install seals on pistons with lips facing away from spring guide.
3. Using tool J-21363 or equivalent, install clutch piston on center support.
4. install spring guide and clutch release spring.
5. instal spring retainer and snap ring.
6. install oil seal rings on center support hub.
7. Air check operation of intermediate clutch piston.
