Disassemble









1. Remove torque converter, fluid filler tube, fluid pan, manual detent roller and spring and strainer. Disconnect governor pressure switch and solenoid electrical connectors, then remove pressure switch, converter clutch solenoid and solenoid pipes.

2. Remove transfer plate reinforcement and servo cover.

3. Remove valve body, transfer plate and gasket be careful not to damage or lose manual valve and manual valve link during removal of valve body.






4. Remove the two check balls from transmission case and note location for reassembly.






5. Using tool J-23075, compress servo piston and remove snap ring. Loosen tool slowly to relieve servo spring tension, then remove tool and servo assemble.

6. Remove inner lever locknut from selector lever shaft, then the inner lever.

7. Remove selector lever shaft spring pin using suitable side-cutters with a wire inside the pin to keep it from collapsing. Remove the shaft, seal, electrical connector and O-ring if necessary. Check the shaft for burrs before removing it to prevent case damage.






8. Remove vacuum modulator, plunger, valve and sleeve from case.

9. Pull out spring pin and push on spring seat of detent valve from front of case and remove detent valve, sleeve, spring, and spring seat from rear of case.

10. Remove speedometer driven gear assembly, then the extension housing.

11. Remove parking pawl actuator lever and actuator rod from extension housing.

12. Depress speedometer drive ear retaining clip and slide gear output shaft. Remove governor retaining bolts and slide governor off shaft. Remove governor hub snap ring and slide hub off shaft.









13. Remove outer seven converter housing attaching bolts. Loosen, but do not remove, the inner five oil pump bolts, then remove O-ring from input shaft. If O-ring is not removed, second and third clutch will come out with converter housing and O-ring or personal injury may occur.

14. Remove the converter housing together with oil pump and reverse clutch, then remove selective washer, located between oil pump and second clutch drum.

15. Remove second and third clutch assemblies, then separate the second clutch assembly from third clutch assembly.

16. Remove reverse clutch plates, noting position, and aluminum pressure plate from case. If clutch plates are not being replaced , they must be
reinstalled in original positions.

17. Remove inside selector lever and parking lock actuator rod.

18. Remove bearing assembly, thrust washer and planetary carrier assembly.

19. Remove bearing assembly and thrust washer located between planetary carrier assembly and case.

20. Remove reaction sun gear and drum, then bearing assembly and washer.

21. Remove low band, noting location.
