The front axle on all-wheel drive units uses a conventional ring and pinion gear set, Fig 1. The axle is full time all-wheel drive and the drive axles are completely flexible assemblies using an inner and outer constant velocity (CV) joints. The inner CV is a ``tri-pot'' design, completely flexible and moves in and out. The outer CV is of ``Rzeppa'' design which is flexible but can not move in and out.
