Date: November, 1995

Subject:
Front Disc Brake Squeaks/Squeals (Install New Front Disc Pad)

Models:

1990-95 GMC Truck G Vans - Built Before VIN SF522888
with RPO's JB5 or JB7 Brakes

Condition

Some customers may experience a high pitched squeak/squeal coming from the front disc pads under light or moderate brake applications.

Cause

The above characteristic is commonly due to component sensitivity to moisture and contaminates.

Correction

A revised front disc pad with a new insulator material DM7642 (Wolverine) has been released. The new insulator is permanently attached to the metal portion opposite side of the brake pad.

It is important to understand that the new material may not totally eliminate brake noise. It may however reduce the noises to a level which is more acceptable.

Because of strict design requirements, the disc brake pads on vehicles used today consist of a semimetallic-resin mixture which may cause an occasional or intermittent high pitched squeak/squeal when brakes are light or moderately applied. Some brake noise may be characteristic. If the Dealer service department has demonstrated that the condition is a normal characteristic, the customer should be assured that this is normal and no repairs should be attempted.

Service Procedure

Reference the Brake Pad section for proper replacement procedures.

Important:
If the brake rotors need to be refinished, follow the procedures located in the Service Manual Reference Section 5B1.
