Outer Joint Assembly Replacement
DISASSEMBLE1. Perform Steps 1 through 3 in OUTER JOINT SEAL REPLACEMENT.
2. Use a brass drift and hammer to gently tap on the C/V joint cage until it is tilted enough to remove the first chrome alloy ball.
3. Tilt the cage in opposite direction to remove opposing ball.
- Repeat this process until all six balls are removed.
4. Position the cage and the inner race 90 degrees to the centerline of the outer race and align the cage windows with the lands of the outer race.
5. Separate the cage and the inner race from the outer race.
6. Rotate the inner race 90° to the center line of the cage with the lands of the inner race aligned with the windows of the cage.
7. Pivot the inner race into the cage window and remove the inner race.
ASSEMBLE
- Apply chassis grease to the ball grooves of the inner race, and outer race.
1. Inner race to the cage.
A. Rotate inner race 90° to center line of cage with lands of inner race aligned with windows of cage.
B. Align the cage windows with the lands. Pivot the cage into position.
C. Make sure the retaining ring side of the inner race faces out.
2. Balls.
A. Tap on the cage with a brass drift to tilt it enough to install the balls.
B. Pack the joint with chassis grease.
Important: Be sure that retaining ring side of inner race faces the axle shaft.
3. Install outer joint seal.
