Oil Pump Replacement

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

^ TOOLS REQUIRED
- J 35271 Flywheel Holder
- J 34353 Crankshaft Oil Seal Guide

1. Discharge and recover the refrigerant, if vehicle equipped.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the four bolts and the front skid plate from the vehicle, if the vehicle is equipped.
4. Remove the front differential assembly from the chassis in the four-wheel drive model vehicles.
5. Place a drain pan beneath the engine oil pan to catch the escaping oil.





6. Remove the engine oil drain plug (1) and the gasket allowing engine oil to drain.
7. Remove the clutch housing lower plate for manual transmission equipped vehicles.
8. Remove the torque converter housing lower plate for automatic transmission vehicles.





9. Remove the following from the cylinder block (1):
^ Sixteen bolts
^ Two nuts
^ The engine oil pan (2)

10. Remove the two bolts and the oil pump strainer (3) from the cylinder block.
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Remove the following components, if vehicle equipped.
^ The A/C drive belt
^ The compressor.
^ The bracket

13. Remove the following components.
^ The timing belt outside cover
^ The timing belt
^ The timing belt tensioner

14. Remove the oil level indicator from the guide tube.
15. Remove the one bolt and guide tube with the O-ring from the oil pump.





16. Use a J 35271 on the flywheel (1) in order to remove the lock crankshaft.





17. Remove the crankshaft timing belt gear bolt (1).
18. Remove the crankshaft timing belt gear (2).





19. Remove the following from the cylinder block:
^ The seven bolts
^ The oil pump assembly (1)
^ The gasket
^ The rubber oil pump-to-coolant pump seals
^ The two guide pins

20. Clean the following assemblies:
^ The cylinder block
^ The oil pump
^ The oil pan mating surfaces

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

^ TOOLS REQUIRED
- J 35271 Flywheel Holder
- J 34853 Crankshaft Oil Seal Guide





1. Apply a thin coat of oil to the J 34853.
2. Use the J 34853 in order to install the oil seal to the crankshaft.





3. Use the J 34853 in order to install the two guide pins and the oil pump assembly (3).

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





4. Secure the oil pump assembly with the seven bolts.
^ Tighten the oil pump bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).

5. Inspect the oil seal lip to ensure the oil seal lip is not upturned.
6. Remove the J 34853.
7. Raise and support the vehicle.





8. Apply a gasket paste to the engine oil pan mating surface (1) in a continuous bead. Use GM P/N 1050026 or the equivalent.
9. Install the oil pump strainer to the engine oil pan.





10. Install the oil pump strainer (3) to the cylinder block (3). Secure with the oil pump strainer bolt and the oil pump strainer bracket bolt.
^ Tighten the oil pump strainer bolt and the oil pump strainer bracket bolt to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).

11. Install the engine oil pan to the cylinder block. Secure the engine oil pan with sixteen bolts and two nuts.
^ Tighten the engine oil pan nuts and bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).

12. Install the engine oil drain plug and the gasket to the engine oil pan (2).
^ Tighten the engine oil drain plug to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).

13. Install the clutch housing lower plate for manual transmission equipped vehicles.
14. Install the torque converter housing lower plate for automatic transmission vehicles.
15. Install the front differential assembly to the chassis in four-wheel drive model vehicles.
16. Install the front skid plate if equipped. Secure the front skid plate with four bolts.
^ Tighten the front skid plate bolts to 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).

17. Lower the vehicle.
18. Install the crankshaft timing belt gear. Secure the timing belt gear with one bolt.
^ Tighten the crankshaft timing belt gear to 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.).

19. Install the guide tube with a new O-ring and the oil level indicator to the cylinder block. Secure the guide tube with a new O-ring and the oil level indicator with one bolt.
^ Tighten the guide tube bolt to 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).

Install the following components:
^ The timing belt outside cover
^ The timing belt
^ The tensioner

20. Install the following, if vehicle equipped.
^ The A/C drive belt
^ The compressor

^ The bracket

21. Refill the engine oil to the specifications.
22. Evacuate and charge the A/C system if the vehicle is equipped.
23. Start the engine after the installation is complete.
24. Check for normal oil pressure.
