Installation Procedure

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE





1. Attach J 36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head.

NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.
^ Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).





3. Attach J 36857 to the left front cylinder head.
Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.
^ Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the engine into the vehicle.
5. Install the engine mounting through bolts.
6. Remove the engine lift hooks from the cylinder head.
7. Install the air compressor/power steering mounting bracket to the engine block. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (AC).
8. Install the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (Generator) in Starting and Charging.
9. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
10. Install the bolts from the transmission to the engine block,
^ For the automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
^ For the manual transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
11. Install the ground straps to the engine block. Refer to Ground Strap Replacement in Powertrain Management.
12. Install the hoses to the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
13. Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
14. Install the convertor pan cover to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.





15. Install the starter to the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
16. Install the oil cooler lines to the engine block if equipped. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Line Replacement in Cooling System.





17. Install the exhaust pipes to the exhaust manifold.
^ For vehicles under 8600 lb GVWR, refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (Gas, below 8600 lb (GVWR))
^ For vehicles over 8600 lb GVWR, refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (Gas, 8600 lb and above (GVWR)).
18. Install the front propeller shaft (4WD). Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Axle - NP8) or Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Axle -All Except NP8) in Driveline and Axle.
19. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
20. Install the fuel lines to the fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement (Engine Compartment).





21. Install the ignition coil to the upper intake manifold. Refer to Ignition Coil and ICM Replacement in Powertrain Management.
22. Install the electrical connector to the distributor. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Powertrain Management.
23. Install the electrical connector to the EGR valve. Refer to EGR Valve Replacement in Powertrain Managements.
24. Install the electrical connectors to the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Installation (without RPO 9C2).

CAUTION: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.
In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or Install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.


25. Install the NEW accelerator control cable to the Throttle Body. Refer to Throttle Body Installation (without RPO 9C2).
26. Install the vacuum lines to the engine.
27. Install the generator to the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (Generator) in Starting and Charging.
28. Install the air conditioning compressor to the air conditioning/power steering mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Brackets Replacement (AC) in Heating and Air Conditioning.
29. Install the engine electrical wiring harness to the engine.
30. Install the radiator to the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.





31. Install the Air Cleaner Duct and Resonator to the throttle body.
32. Fill the radiator with coolant. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.
33. Recharge the air conditioning system. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
34. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable in Powertrain Management.
35. Install the hood.
36. Before starting a new engine or one that has been repaired. Refer to Engine Set-Up and Testing.
