PCM Replacement


REMOVAL PROCEDURE

NOTE:
^ Check the resistance values of all PCM relays, solenoids, and other output controls before replacing or substituting the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Check all the sensor wiring and the PCM output control circuits for a short to ground before replacing or substituting the PCM. Perform all circuit repairs or malfunctioning component part replacements before installing a replacement or substitute PCM. This will prevent damage to the replacement or substitute PCM.
^ In order to prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge damage to the PCM, Do Not touch the connector pins or the soldered components on the circuit board.

IMPORTANT:
^ Service of the powertrain control module (PCM) consists of the replacement of the PCM. The PCM has no serviceable parts. The PCM has an erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM) chip that is programmed at the factory. The PCM CANNOT BE REPROGRAMMED in the field. Replace the PCM as a complete assembly if the PCM is determined to be faulty.
^ When replacing the production powertrain control module (PCM) with a service PCM, transfer the broadcast code and production PCM number to the service PCM label. This will allow for positive identification of the PCM throughout the service life of the vehicle.

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Description:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disable the SIR system.
3. Release the two plastic retainers and remove the PCM cover (1).




4. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors as follows:
^ Disconnect the four PCM electrical connectors with A/T vehicles.
^ Disconnect the three PCM electrical connectors with M/T vehicles.
5. Remove the two PCM retaining bolts (3).
6. Slide the PCM (4) forward and out from the PCM bracket.
7. Remove the tour PCM bracket bolts (1).
8. Remove the PCM bracket (2) from underneath the IP.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Install the PCM bracket (2) underneath the IP.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

2. Secure the PCM bracket (2) with the four bolts (1).

Tighten
Tighten the PCM bracket bolts to 6 N.m (54 lb in).

3. Install the PCM (4) into the PCM bracket (2).
4. Secure the PCM to the PCM bracket with the two bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the PCM retaining bolts to 6 N.m (54 lb in).

5. Connect the PCM electrical connectors as follows:
^ Connect the four PCM electrical connectors to the PCM on A/T vehicles.
^ Connect the three PCM electrical connectors to the PCM on M/T vehicles.

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Description:

6. Install the PCM cover (1) and secure with the two plastic retainers.
7. Enable the SIR system.
8. Connect the negative battery cable.

Tighten
Tighten the negative battery cable retaining bolt to 8 N.m (72 lb in).
