Removal and Replacement

Removal Procedure
1. Remove the hood from the vehicle. Refer to Hood Replacement.
2. Remove the battery from the vehicle. Refer to Battery Replacement.
3. Remove the engine cover from the vehicle. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement.
4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
5. Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating and Air Conditioning.
6. Remove the front bumper from the vehicle. Refer to Bumper Replacement - Front.
7. Remove the grille from the vehicle. Refer to Grille Replacement.
8. Remove the auxiliary engine oil cooler from the vehicle (if needed). Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Replacement - Auxiliary in Cooling System.
9. Remove the transmission oil cooler (if equipped).
10. Remove the A/C condenser from the vehicle. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
11. Remove the radiator from the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.
12. Remove the radiator support from the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Support Replacement.
13. Remove the radiator hoses from the engine assembly. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Cooling System.
14. Remove the left accessory mounting bracket from the engine assembly. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Left) or Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Right).
15. Remove right accessory mounting bracket from the engine assembly. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Left) or Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Right).
16. Remove the engine wiring harness from the left side of the engine assembly.
17. Remove the engine wiring harness from the right side of the engine assembly.
18. Remove the turbocharger assembly from the engine block. Refer to Turbocharger Replacement.
19. Remove the exhaust manifolds from the cylinder heads. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement.
20. Remove the lower intake manifold from the engine block. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper) or Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
21. Raise the vehicle and install safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in Service Precautions.
22. Remove the starter assembly from the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.
23. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines from the retainers on the engine oil pan and secure to the side.
24. Remove the engine oil cooler lines from the engine and secure to the side.
25. Remove the bolts from the flywheel to the torque convertor.
26. Remove the ground straps from the engine block to the frame.
27. Remove the electrical connector from the block heater.
28. Remove the engine oil filter.
29. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in Service Precautions.
30. Install the J 36857 and a length of chain, using GM P/N 23503910 or equivalent attaching bolt to the right cylinder head rear corner and left cylinder head front corner.
31. Support the transmission.
32. Attach a suitable lifting device to the chain.
33. Remove the engine mount through bolt from the left engine mount.
34. Remove the right mount through bolt from the right engine mount.
35. Remove the left engine mount from the frame.
36. Remove the right engine mount from the frame.
37. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
Important: It may be necessary to remove the flywheel from the crankshaft before installing the engine assembly to the engine stand
38. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Removal.
39. Install the engine assembly on a suitable engine stand.
40. Remove the lifting device from the engine assembly.
41. Remove the lifting brackets from the engine assembly.
42. Remove the engine mount brackets from the engine block.
43. Remove the right engine mount bracket from the engine block.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
1. Install the engine mount bracket to the engine block.
^ Tighten the engine mount bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).
2. Install the right engine mount bracket to the engine block.
^ Tighten the engine mount bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the J 36857 and a length of chain, using GM P/N 23503910 or equivalent attaching bolt, to the rear of the right cylinder head and the front of the left cylinder head.
4. Remove the engine assembly from the engine stand.
5. Install the flywheel on the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Installation.
6. Install the left engine mount to the frame.
^ Tighten the engine mount bolts to 59 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the right engine mount to the frame.
^ Tighten the engine mount bolts to 59 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).
8. Install the engine assembly in the vehicle.
9. Lower the engine assembly on to the engine mount brackets.
10. Install the engine mount through bolt for the left side.
^ Tighten the through bolt to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the engine mount through bolt for the right side.
^ Tighten the through bolt to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.).
12. Remove the lifting device from the engine assembly.
13. Raise the vehicle and install safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in Service Precautions. Install the bolts from the transmission to the engine block. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain. Install the bolts from the flywheel to the torque convertor. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain. Install the starter assembly to the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.
17. Install the electrical connection for the block heater.
18. Install the ground straps from the frame to the engine block.
19. Install the transmission oil cooler lines to the retainer.
20. Install the engine oil cooler lines to the engine block. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Line Replacement in Cooling System.
21. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
22. Install the lower intake manifold to the engine block. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper) or Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
23. Install the exhaust manifolds to the cylinder heads. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement.
24. Install the turbocharger on the engine block. Refer to Turbocharger Replacement.
25. Install the left accessory mounting bracket to the engine block. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Left) or Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Right).
26. Install the right accessory mounting bracket to the engine block. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Left) or Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Right).
27. Install the wiring harness to the left side of the engine assembly.
28. Install the wiring harness to the right side of the engine assembly.
29. Install the radiator hoses to the engine assembly. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Cooling System.
30. Install the radiator support on the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Support Replacement.
31. Install radiator in the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Cooling System.
32. Install the A/C condenser in the vehicle. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
33. Install the transmission auxiliary oil cooler (if equipped). Refer to Transmission Oil Cooler Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
34. Install the auxiliary engine oil cooler. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Replacement - Auxiliary in Cooling System.
35. Install the grille on the vehicle. Refer to Grille Replacement.
36. Install the front bumper on the vehicle. Refer to Bumper Replacement - Front.
37. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
38. Recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating and Air Conditioning.
39. Install the battery in the vehicle. Refer to Battery Replacement.
40. Install the hood assembly on the vehicle. Refer to Hood Replacement.
41. Install the engine with the proper type and quantity of engine oil. Refer to Engine on and Oil Filter Replacement.
42. Install a scan tool and make any adjustment that are necessary.
43. Install the engine cover in the vehicle. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement.
44. Perform the TDC offset adjustment procedure. Refer to Fuel Injection Pump TDC Offset Adjustment.
