Flushing the Power Steering System
Notice: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops while flushing the power steering system. Holding the steering wheel against the wheel stops will cause high system pressure, overheating, and damage to the power steering pump and/or gear.1. Raise the front of the vehicle off the ground until the wheels turn freely.
2. Remove the fluid return line (2) at the pump inlet connector.
3. For vehicles with Hydroboost, remove the fluid return line (3) at the remote reservoir.
4. Plug the connector port on the pump/reservoir.
5. Position the line toward a large container in order to catch the draining fluid.
6. Run the engine at idle while an assistant fills the reservoir with new power steering fluid.
Important: Do not contact the wheel stops. Do not hold the steering wheel near a stop position. This stops the fluid flow and places the pump in the pressure relief mode. A sudden overflow from the reservoir may develop if you hold the steering wheel at a stop.
7. Turn the steering wheel near each stop.
8. Install any lines, hoses, or components removed from the vehicle.
Important: Do not re-use any drained power steering fluid.
9. Fill the system with new power steering fluid. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid.
10. Bleed the system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System.
11. Operate the engine for approximately 15 minutes.
12. Inspect the power steering fluid for contamination.
13. If foreign material is still present, continue to repeat the above steps until the draining fluid is clear.
14. As the reservoir fills, inspect the draining fluid for contamination.
15. If foreign material is still present, complete the following steps:
15.1. Replace all of the lines.
15.2. Disassemble the power steering system components.
15.3. Clean the components.
15.4. Replace the components, if needed.
