Rear Oil Seal and/or Bearing Replacement

- J2619-01 Slide Hammer
- J 8092 Driver Handle
- J 21128 Axle Shaft and Pinion Seal Installer
- J 23689 Axle Bearing Shaft Remover (Large Shaft)
- J 23690 Axle Shaft Bearing Installer
- J 29709 Axle Shaft Bearing Installer
- J 29712 Axle Shaft Bearing Remover (9 1/2 Inch Ring Gear)
- J 29713 Axle Shaft Bearing Installer (9 1/2 Inch Ring Gear)

Removal Procedure





1. Raise and support the vehicle on a hoist.
2. Remove the axle shaft (1). Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement (8 1/2, 9 1/2 Ring Gear) or Axle Shaft Replacement (10 1/2 Ring Gear).
3. Remove the axle shaft seal (2) using the J 23689.
4. Remove the bearing (3) from the housing (5).
Use the J 23689 or the J 29712 and the J2619-01.
5. Inspect all the parts for damage. Replace the damaged or worn parts as necessary.


Installation Procedure





1. Lubricate the cavity between the seal lips and the bearing with wheel bearing lubricant. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
2. Install the bearing using the J 23690 or the J 29709 and the J 8092.
3. Drive the bearing into the axle housing until the tool bottoms against the tube.





4. Install the seal using the J 21128 or the J 29713.
5. Drive the tool into the bore until the seal bottoms flush with the tube.





6. Install the axle shaft (1). Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement (8 1/2, 9 1/2 Ring Gear) or Axle Shaft Replacement (10 1/2 Ring Gear).
7. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
