Timing Cover: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure
1. Remove the crankshaft pulley and hub. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer and Hub Replacement.
2. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
3. Remove the two nuts at the front of the oil pan.
4. Remove the studs for the engine front cover to the oil pan.
5. Remove the engine front cover.
Important: Inspect the engine front cover for warping or damage. Replace if needed.
6. Clean all sealing surfaces.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the crankshaft front oil seal using the following procedure.
1.1. Lubricate the seal lips with engine oil.
1.2. Use the J 35468 and a hammer in order to install the seal.
2. Apply a 10 mm (1/8 inch) wide, by 5 mm (3/16 inch) thick bead of GM P/N 12346286 RTV sealer to the oil pan to the area where the oil pan and the engine front cover meet.
3. Install the engine front cover over the dowel pins in the engine block.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the engine front cover bolts.
^ Tighten the engine front cover bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).
5. Install the studs for the oil pan in the engine front cover.
^ Tighten the studs to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.).
6. Install the oil pan nuts on the studs.
^ Tighten the oil pan nuts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
7. Install the crankshaft balancer hub and the crankshaft pulley. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer and Hub Replacement.
8. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
