A Symptom Diagnosis

IMPORTANT: The following steps must be completed before using the symptom tables.

1. Perform A Diagnostic System Check - Instrument Cluster before using the Symptom Tables in order to verify that all of the following are true:
^ There are no DTCs set.
^ The control module(s) can communicate via the serial data link.
2. Review the system operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to the following list:
^ Gauge Description
^ Indicator Description

VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION
^ Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the Instrument Cluster or Audible Warning Systems. Refer to Checking Aftermarket Accessories in Diagrams.
^ Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.
^ Inspect the reservoirs for the proper fluid levels before beginning the diagnosis.
^ Inspect the applicable reservoir for the proper fluid level related to the indicator.
^ Verify that the indicators work properly during the bulb check.

INTERMITTENT
Faulty electrical connections or wiring may be the cause of intermittent conditions. Refer to Testing for Intermittent and Poor Connections in Diagrams.

^ AIR BAG Indicator Always On or Inoperative. Refer to A Diagnostic System Check - SIR in Restraint Systems.
^ Brake Warning Indicator Always On or Inoperative. Refer to Hydraulic Brake Diagnostic System Check in Hydraulic Brakes.
^ SECURITY Indicator Always On or Inoperative. Refer to A Diagnostic System Check - Theft Deterrent in Antitheft and Alarm Systems.
^ SERVICE ENGINE SOON Indicator (MIL) Always On or Inoperative. Refer to A Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Computers and Control Systems - 4.3L.
^ SERVICE ENGINE SOON Indicator Always On or Inoperative. Refer to A Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Computers and Control Systems - 2.2L (L43).

^ Fasten Safety Belt Indicator/Chime Always On in Seat Belts
^ Fasten Safety Belt Indicator/Chime Inoperative in Seat Belts
^ High Beam Indicator Always On in Lighting and Horns.
^ High Beam Indicator Inoperative in Lighting and Horns.
^ Turn Signal Indicators Inoperative - Left in Lighting and Horns.
^ Turn Signal Indicator Always On - Left in Lighting and Horns.
^ Turn Signal Indicators Inoperative - Right in Lighting and Horns.
^ Turn Signal Indicator Always On - Right in Lighting and Horns.
^ BATTERY Indicator Always ON. Refer to Charge Indicator Always On in Starting and Charging.

^ SHIFT Indicator Always ON (Manual Transmission Only)
