Timing Chain Guide: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the front axle assembly (4WD only).
3. Remove the rack and pinion assembly.
4. Drain the engine oil.
5. Remove the oil pan.





6. Drain the cooling system.
7. Remove the cooling fan and shroud.





8. Remove the cooling fan drive belt.
9. Remove the accessory drive belt.
10. Remove the cooling fan drive belt tensioner.





11. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner (2).
12. Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley (1).





13. Remove the 4 bolts and the water pump pulley.





14. Remove the bypass hose (3) from the coolant outlet pipe.
15. Remove the 2 bolts and the water bypass pipe bracket (2) from the cylinder head.





16. Remove the crankshaft bolt and pulley.

Important: Do not discharge the A/C system, nor remove the refrigerant lines from the compressor.





17. Remove the 3 bolts (1) and the A/C compressor (if equipped) from its bracket and position aside.





18. Remove the 4 bolts and the A/C compressor bracket (if equipped).





19. Remove the cylinder head cover (1).





20. Remove the nut and 15 bolts and the timing chain housing.

Installation Procedure





1. Clean the sealing surfaces on the timing chain housing, the cylinder head, the oil pan, the engine block and the lower crankcase.
2. Inspect the front crank seal. Replace as necessary.





3. Install the dowel pins to the timing chain housing (1).
4. Apply a continuous bead of GM P/N 12345997 or equivalent to the timing cover mating surface (2).
5. Apply a bead of GM P/N 12345997 or equivalent to the cylinder head-to-engine block mating points (3).
6. Lubricate the front crank seal lip with Chassis Grease GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





7. Install the timing chain housing. Secure with the nut and 15 bolts.
Tighten the nut and bolts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).





8. Install the cylinder head cover (1).
Tighten the nuts to 11 Nm (97 inch lbs.).





9. Install the crankshaft pulley and bolt.
Tighten the bolt to 150 Nm (109 ft. lbs.).





10. Install the A/C compressor bracket (if equipped).
Tighten the bolts to 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).





11. Install the A/C compressor (if equipped) to its bracket and secure with the 3 bolts (1).
Tighten the bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).





12. Install the water bypass pipe bracket (2) to the cylinder head. Secure with the 2 bolts.
13. Install the bypass hose (3) to the coolant outlet pipe.





14. Install the water pump pulley. Secure with the 4 bolts.





15. Install the accessory drive belt idler pulley (1).
16. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner (2).
17. Install the cooling fan drive belt tensioner.





18. Install the accessory drive belt.
19. Install the cooling fan drive belt.





20. Install the cooling fan and shroud.





21. Install the oil pan.
22. Install the rack and pinion assembly.
23. Install the front axle assembly on four wheel drive vehicles.
24. Fill the differential on four wheel drive vehicles.
25. Fill the power steering system.
26. Bleed the power steering system.
27. Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
28. Fill the cooling system.
29. Connect the negative battery cable.
30. Adjust the front toe-in.
