36. Engine Flywheel Clean and Inspect
Engine Flywheel Cleaning and Inspection- Tools Required
- J 8001 Dial Indicator Set
- J26900-13 Magnetic Base
- J 35271 Flywheel Holder
1. Clean the flywheel in solvent.
Caution: Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.
2. Dry the flywheel with compressed air.
3. Inspect the automatic transmission flywheel for the following:
- Damaged ring gear teeth. Replace the flywheel if the ring gear is damaged, cracked or worn.
- Stress cracks around the flywheel-to-crankshaft bolt hole locations.
Important: Do not attempt to repair the welded areas that retain the ring gear to the flywheel plate. Install a new flywheel.
- Welded areas that retain the ring gear onto the flywheel for cracking.
4. Measure the flywheel face runout using a J 8001 with a J26900-13. Replace the flywheel if the runout exceeds 0.2 mm (0.0078 inch).
