Steering Column Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the driver knee bolster reinforcement. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Reinforcement Replacement (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Coil Replacement (Removal and Replacement).
3. Disconnect any electrical connectors as needed.
Note: These scribe marks will be needed for proper alignment of the intermediate steering shaft.
4. Place scribe marks on the intermediate steering shaft and the steering column shaft prior to removal.
5. Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt at the steering column and discard it.
6. Separate the intermediate steering shaft from the steering column shaft.
7. Remove the steering column pivot bolt.
8. Remove the steering column mounting bolts.
9. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
10. If replacing the steering column then transfer any parts as needed.
Installation Procedure
Note: If replacing the steering column then transfer any scribed marks from the old component to the new one.
1. Position the steering column in the vehicle.
2. Hand start the steering column pivot bolt.
3. Hand start the steering column mounting bolts.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
4. Tighten the steering column bolts using the following order:
1. Tighten the steering column pivot bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).
2. Tighten the right steering column mounting bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).
3. Tighten the left steering column mounting bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).
Note: Failure to transfer the scribed marks may result in an off-center steering wheel.
5. If installing a new intermediate steering shaft then transfer the scribed marks.
6. Align the scribed marks on the intermediate steering shaft to the scribed marks on the steering column shaft.
7. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering column shaft.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).
8. Install a new intermediate steering shaft bolt at the steering column.
Tighten the bolt to 34 Nm (25 lb ft).
9. Connect all electrical connectors as needed.
10. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Coil Replacement (Removal and Replacement).
11. Install the driver knee bolster reinforcement. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Reinforcement Replacement (Service and Repair).
