Diagnostic Instructions

Circuit/System Description

The passenger presence system (PPS) is used to monitor the pressure profile of any occupant that is sitting in the front passenger seat and communicates the profile classification to the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The SDM will either enable or suppress the deployment of the passenger instrument panel air bag based on the profile classification of the occupant. If the passenger presence module detects a battery voltage condition it will set DTC 1066-1068. The passenger presence module will communicate to the SDM through a dedicated serial data circuit that a PPS fault is present. The SDM will set DTC B0081 indicating a problem within the PPS and suppress the deployment of the passenger instrument panel air bag and illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The passenger presence module has detected supply battery voltage too low or too high.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* The passenger presence module will set a DTC and then communicate with the SDM.
* The SDM will set DTC B0081.
* The SDM will disable the passenger instrument panel air bag deployment loop.
* The passenger presence module will illuminate the passenger air bag status OFF indicator.
* The SDM requests the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* The condition for setting the DTC no longer exists.
* A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Circuit/System Verification

Note: The Passenger Presence Module can set DTC 1066-1068 when the system voltage drops below 8 V.

1. Ignition OFF, measure and record the battery voltage at the battery terminals. The battery voltage should stabilize between 12.4 and 12.8 V within a few minutes of turning the ignition OFF.

If not within the specified range, refer to Battery Inspection/Test (Battery Inspection/Test).

2. Engine running, accessories OFF, measure and record the battery voltage at the battery terminals. The voltage should be at least 1 volt greater than the voltage measured in step 1 but less than 15 V.

If not within the specified range, refer to circuit/system testing.

Circuit/System Testing

Note: When removing connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion in the following requires repair or replacement of the affected.

* Passenger presence module
* Passenger presence module wiring harness

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connectors at the passenger presence module.

Note: Some control module ground circuits may require up to 20 minutes after the ignition is turned off before achieving a resistance reading of less than 5 ohms. In most cases the readings will drop below 20 ohms within 1 minute indicating the control module is going to sleep.

2. Ignition OFF, scan tool disconnected, open and close the driver door and wait 1 minute. Test for less than 5 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 3 and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. Ignition OFF, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 2 and ground.

If test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.

4. If all circuits test normal, reconnect harness and confirm that DTCs are history, if history clear DTCs.
5. If DTC is still current, replace the passenger presence module.

Repair Instructions
