Circuit/System Description
The passenger presence system (PPS) is used to monitor the profile of any occupant that is sitting in the front passenger seat and communicates the profile classification to the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). The SDM will either enable or suppress the deployment of the passenger instrument panel air bag based on the profile classification of the occupant. If the passenger presence module detects a malfunction with the communication circuit then the passenger presence module will set a DTC. The SDM will set DTC B0081 indicating a problem within the PPS and will suppress the deployment of the passenger instrument panel air bag and illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
Conditions for Running the DTC
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 V.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The passenger presence module has never established or lost communications with the SDM.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
* The passenger presence module will set a DTC and then communicate with the SDM.
* The SDM will set DTC B0081.
* The SDM will disable the passenger instrument panel air bag deployment loop.
* The passenger presence module will illuminate the passenger air bag status OFF indicator.
* The SDM requests the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
* The condition for setting the DTC no longer exists.
* A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Circuit/System Testing
Note: When removing connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion in the following requires repair or replacement of the affected component/connector.
* Passenger presence module
* SDM
* Passenger presence module wiring harness connector
* SDM wiring harness connector
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the passenger presence module and the SDM.
2. Test for less than 1 V between the passenger presence sensor serial data circuit terminal 60 and ground.
• If greater than the specified range, test the serial data circuit for a short to voltage.
3. Test for infinite resistance between the passenger presence sensor serial data circuit terminal 60 and ground.
• If less than the specified value, test the serial data circuit for a short to ground.
4. Test for less than 1 ohm between the passenger presence sensor serial data circuit terminal 60 and the passenger presence sensor serial data circuit terminal 1.
• If greater than the specified range, test the serial data circuit for an open/high resistance.
5. Reconnect the harness connectors.
6. Ignition ON, clear DTCs, refer to Passenger Presence System Displaying Code Procedure (Passenger Presence System Displaying Code Procedure).
7. If DTC B1000 is set in the SDM, replace the SDM.
8. Verify that DTC 4061-4065 is not set.
• If DTC is still set, replace the passenger presence module.
Repair Instructions
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
