Quick Learn
Two shift quality learn procedures are available for the 41TE:^ Quick Learn
^ Scheduled Learn (road test)
To provide the best transaxle operation after a repair or TCM replacement, each procedure should be used to help the TCM learn, or recalibrate, itself to the transaxle.
Quick Learn procedure is available to preprogram the shift characteristics into the TCM. The Quick Learn procedure simply speeds up the TCM learning process. The vehicle must still be driven and shifted several times in each gear range during the road test. This will fully utilize the TCM's adaptive memory capability. The Quick Learn procedure is accessed through transaxle diagnosis and performed by the DRBIII Scan Tool.
Scheduled Learn is the other shift quality learn procedure. It is designed and programmed into the TCM, as an ongoing process that continually updates shift timing and learns clutch fill rates. This is done to optimize shifting throughout the life of the transaxle. The vehicle should initially be driven by the technician to start the scheduled learning function.
Perform both the Quick Learn and Shift Quality learn, or road test, procedures when replacing the transaxle, TCM, solenoid pack, clutches, clutch seals or valve body.
The Quick Learn function customizes adaptive parameters of the TCM to the transaxle characteristics of a vehicle. This gives the customer improved "as received" shift quality compared to the initial parameters stored in the TCM.
The Quick Learn function should be performed:
^ Upon installation of a new service TCM
^ After replacement or rebuild of internal transmission components or the torque converter
^ After moving a TCM from one vehicle to another. NOTE: This is not a recommended procedure.
^ If one or more of the clutch volumes indexes (CVI's) contained skewed readings because of abnormal conditions.
To perform the Quick Learn procedure, the following conditions must be met.
^ It is imperative that the vehicle be shifted into OD with the engine running and the oil level set to the correct level. This step will purge the air in the clutch circuits to prevent erroneous clutch volume values, which could cause poor initial shift quality.
^ The brakes must be applied.
^ The engine must be idling.
^ The throttle angle (TP sensor) must be less than 3 degrees.
^ The shift lever position must stay in neutral until prompted to shift into OD.
^ The shift lever must stay in OD after the "Shift to Overdrive" prompt until the DRBIII indicates the procedure is complete.
^ The oil temperature must be between 60-200°F.
NOTE: THE ABOVE CONDITIONS MUST BE MAINTAINED DURING THE PROCEDURE TO KEEP THE PROCEDURE FROM BEING ABORTED.
The Quick Learn procedure is performed with the DRBIII by selecting Transmission" system then "Miscellaneous" functions, then "Quick Learn". Follow the procedure instructions displayed on the DRBIII.
NOTES ABOUT QUICK LEARN FEATURES
The nature of the Quick Learn function requires that certain features must be taken into consideration.
^ Before performing Quick Learn, it is imperative that the vehicle be shifted into OD with the engine running and the oil level set to the correct level. This step will purge air from the clutch circuits to prevent erroneous clutch volume values which could cause poor initial shift quality.
^ DO NOT take a TCM that has been "Quick Learned" on one vehicle and install it on another vehicle without performing Quick Learn after installation. Quick Learn adapts the TCM to the particular characteristics of a vehicle's transaxle. Placing a "learned" TCM on another vehicle without doing Quick Learn after installation may result in poor shift quality.
NOTE: Swapping of production TCMs is not a recommended procedure.
If an unused TCM is installed on a vehicle with a HOT engine, Quick Learn will cause the TCM to report a cold calculated oil temperature. This requires monitoring the calculated oil temperature using the DRBIII. If the temperature is below 60°, the transaxle must be run at idle or driven in gear until it goes above 60°. If the temperature is above 200°, the transaxle must cool to below 200°.
First gear is engaged in overdrive after Quick Learn is completed. Place the vehicle in park after performing Quick Learn.
