Rear Wiper - Inoperative/Intermittently Inoperative
NUMBER: 08-003-01 REV. AGROUP: Electrical
DATE: Mar. 9, 2001
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 08-003-01, DATED FEBRUARY 16, 2001, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THE REVISION IS HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS** AND INCLUDES A CHANGE IN THE WIPER MOTOR BUILD DATE CODE.
SUBJECT:
Rear Wiper Inoperative Or Intermittently Inoperative
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves reprogramming or replacing the Body Control Module (BCM) and on some vehicles, replacing the rear wiper motor.
MODELS:
2001 (RS) Town & Country/Voyager/Caravan
2001 (RG) Chrysler Voyager (International Markets)
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The rear wiper may be inoperative or intermittently inoperative. DTC - Rear Wiper Output Short, may be present in the BCM. This DTC is logged when a short circuit on the Rear Wiper Output circuit is detected. Care must be taken to diagnose proper functionality of circuits for the following conditions:
DIAGNOSIS/REPAIR PROCEDURES:
Use the DRBIII(R) to check for BCM DTC.
Rear Wiper Inoperative No BCM DTC - Disconnect the rear wiper motor connector and check Circuit Number (W13), color (BR/LG), pin 3, (Fig. 1), for 12 volts when rear wiper switch is activated and ignition switch in Run position. If 12 volts is measured, perform Repair Procedure One, if no voltage is present, continue with Diagnosis
Rear Wiper Inoperative No BCM DTC and No Voltage At Rear Wiper Connector Pin 3 - Disconnect BCM connector (C2). Verify continuity between pin 3 of the rear wiper connector and pin 32 of the BCM connector (C2), circuit number (W13), color (BR/LG), (Fig. 1). If no continuity, perform Repair Procedure Two. If continuity is present, perform Repair Procedure Three.
Rear Wiper Motor Inoperative With BCM DTC - Rear Wiper Output Short (Rear Washer Will Also Be Inoperative) - Check circuit number (W13), color (BR/LG), pin 3, (Fig. 1) of rear wiper motor connector for a short to ground. If a short is detected, disconnect BCM connector (C2) to verify that pin 32 is not bent. With BCM connector (C2) disconnected verify, at pin 32 of BCM connector (C2), that the short to ground is still present. If short is still present, perform Repair Procedure Four. If the circuit does not contain a short, perform Repair Procedure Five
PARTS REQUIRED:
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
NOTE:
THE MDS2 AND DRBIII(R) ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM PART OF THIS REPAIR. THE MDS2 SYSTEM MUST BE OPERATING WITH CIS CD2077 OR HIGHER.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
THIS REPAIR IS COMPATIBLE WITH DAIMLERCHRYSLER'S MOBILE SERVICE PROGRAM AND DOES NOT REQUIRE HOISTS OR OTHER FULL SERVICE FACILITY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT.
Procedure One
1. Use the procedures outlined on page 8R-7 of the 2001 Town & Country, Caravan and Voyager Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-1005) or the service information on MDS2 to replace the Rear Wiper Motor. The bar code label on the replacement wiper motor must have a date code of **340.0 or later. The date code is the last four digits of the line under the bar code. The first three digits of the date code are the Julian date and the last digit is the year (0-2000, 1=2001).**
NOTE:
REAR WIPER MOTOR REPLACEMENT DOES NOT APPLY TO RG-VEHICLES.
2. Log onto the MDS2 System.
3. Connect the MDS2 (Mopar Diagnostic System) and DRBIII(R) (Scan Tool) to the vehicle (or download the flash to the DRBIII(R) for stand alone use) and switch the ignition to "ON".
NOTE:
AUTO CONNECTION WILL OCCUR ONCE THE DRBIII(R), MDS2 AND VEHICLE ESTABLISH COMMUNICATION. THE "CANNOT READ VIN FROM DRBIII(R)" MESSAGE (ON THE MDS2) WILL BE REPLACED BY THE VEHICLE VIN. PRESS THE "OK" BUTTON ON THE MDS2 TO REQUEST A MDS2 SESSION FOR THE VEHICLE VIN INDICATED. PRESS THE "OK" BUTTON WHEN ASKED TO BEGIN SESSION.
4. Push the FLASH tab on the MDS2.
5. Select READ PART NUMBERS FROM VEHICLE and click SHOW UPDATES on the MDS2.
6. If the BCM p/n is 04686920AF or 04686921AF use the procedures outlined on page 8E-3 of the 2001 Town & Country, Caravan and Voyager Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-1005) or the service information on MDS2 to replace the BCM with p/n 04686920AK or 04686921AK respectively. If BCM p/n is 04686920AG through 04686920AJ, 04686921AG through 04686921AJ, or 04727030AG through 04727030A1 continue with the BCM reprogramming procedure.
NOTE:
A MESSAGE MAY APPEAR (AFTER STEP 3 OR 4) THAT INDICATES NO UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE. IF THIS OCCURS, MAKE SURE YOUR DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT IS OPERATING AT THE LATEST SOFTWARE LEVEL AS LISTED EARLIER IN THIS BULLETIN. IF THE LATEST SOFTWARE IS INSTALLED, AND NO UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE, ANOTHER VEHICLE CONDITION EXISTS THAT WILL REQUIRE FURTHER INVESTIGATION.
7. Select the new software part number with the light pen and click UPDATE CONTROLLER SOFTWARE.
8. The MDS2 and DRBIII(R) will prompt for any operator action needed during the remainder of the reprogramming process.
Procedure Two
1. Locate and repair open or replace wire from rear wiper connector pin 3 to BCM connector C2 pin 32.
2. Reprogram the BCM using steps 2 through 8 of Procedure One.
Procedure Three
1. Use the procedures outlined on page 8E-3 of the 2001 Town & Country, Caravan and Voyager Service Manual (Publication No.81-370-1005) or the service information on MDS2 to replace the BCM with the correct p/n specified in the Parts Required section of this bulletin.
Procedure Four
1. Locate and repair short or replace wire from rear wiper connector pin 3 to BCM connector C2 pin 32.
2. Reprogram the BCM using steps 2 through 8 of Procedure One.
Procedure Five
1. Reprogram the BCM using steps 2 through 8 of Procedure One.
2. If the vehicle being worked is an RS vehicle built prior to Jan. 02, 2001 (MDH 0102XX), use the procedures outlined on page 8R-7 of the 2001 Town & Country, Caravan and Voyager Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-1005) or the service information on MDS2 to replace the rear wiper motor, p/n 05073282AA. The bar code label on the replacement wiper motor must have a date code of **340.0 or later. The date code is the last four digits of the line under the bar code. The first three digits of the date code are the Julian date and the last digit is the year (0=2000, 1=2001).**
NOTE:
REAR WIPER MOTOR REPLACEMENT DOES NOT APPLY TO RG-VEHICLES.
