SUBJECT:
Tire Howl/Drone/Cyclic Sound
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves contacting Michelin for tire replacement.
MODELS:
2001 - **2002** (RS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO RS VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 16" MICHELIN MX4 TIRES (SALES CODE TM5).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some vehicle operators may complain of a howl/drone/moan/humming/cyclic sound when driving at speeds between 45 and 70 mph (72 and 112 km/h) and may be most noticeable at 58-60 mph (93-96 km/h). The source of the sound may be generated from the tires and/or the roof rack (it equipped).
DIAGNOSIS:
Verify proper tire inflation pressure. Visually inspect the tire/wheel assemblies for any abnormal conditions such as mismatched tires/wheels, tire wear, and bent or damaged wheels. It the vehicle is equipped with a roof rack, remove only the root rack cross bows. Test drive the vehicle at speeds of 45-70 mph (72-112 km/h) on a smooth road (preferably asphalt). It the sound is eliminated, the roof rack is the cause. Refer to TSB 23-002-01 Rev. A, Roof Rack Wind Noise/Howl Sound. It the sound is still present, perform the Repair Procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
After being notified of this symptom/condition by the customer and veritying that the condition is due to the tires, Daimlerchrysler Corporation Dealers are to call Michelin Consumer Relations at 1-800-887-0662 (in Canada call 1-888-871-4444 or for Quebec call 1-800-565-7638) for authorization of tire replacement by your local Michelin dealer. In support of this TSB, within the first year of the in-service date, Michelin will authorize replacement at no charge if the tires have at least 8/32 in. (6.4 mm) tread remaining. Mounting and balancing will be provided at no charge. Tires with less than 8/32 in.
