Engine - Turbocharger Noise/Engine Hesitation

SUBJECT:
Engine Hesitation, Loss of Boost, Screeching Sound From Turbo, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0234

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting the vacuum hoses at the turbocharger and wastegate.

MODELS:
2003 (PT) PT Cruiser

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.4L 16 VALVE TURBOCHARGED ENGINE (SALES CODE EDV), BUILT PRIOR TO AUGUST 13, 2002 (MDH 0813XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
One or more of the following symptom/conditions may be present;

1. There may be a high pitched screeching sound coming from the turbo.

2. A hesitation and loss of boost.

3. DTC, "Overboost Performance" (P0234).

If any symptom/condition is present, perform Repair Procedure.

DIAGNOSIS:





1. Remove the clean air hose from the turbocharger (Fig. 1).

2. Inspect the 4 vacuum hoses to the turbocharger and wastegate. If any of the hoses are not attached to the turbocharger and/or wastegate, perform the Repair Procedure. If the hoses are all intact, additional diagnosis is required.


REPAIR PROCEDURE:





1. Locate the turbocharger wastegate vacuum hose (Fig. 2) item # 2, remove the hose from the port. Use a cotton swab wet with water to clean inside the end of the hose, until all residue is removed. Use the dry end of the cotton swab to dry inside the end of the vacuum hose. Use a wet cloth to clean the vacuum hose port on the wastegate until all residue is removed. Reattach the vacuum hose to the wastegate vacuum hose port at the wastegate.

2. Locate the turbocharger surge valve vacuum hose (Fig. 2) item # 3, remove the hose from the port. Use a cotton swab wet with water to clean inside the end of the hose, until all residue is removed. Use the dry end of the cotton swab to dry inside the end of the vacuum hose. Use a wet cloth to clean the vacuum hose port on the surge valve until all residue is removed. Reattach the vacuum hose to the surge valve vacuum hose port at the surge valve.

3. Locate the turbocharger scroll line vacuum hose (Fig. 2) item # 4, remove the hose from the port. Use a cotton swab wet with water to clean inside the end of the hose, until all residue is removed. Use the dry end of the cotton swab to dry inside the end of the vacuum hose. Use a wet cloth to clean the vacuum hose port for the scroll line at the turbocharger until all residue is removed. Reattach the vacuum hose to the scroll line vacuum hose port at the turbocharger.

4. Locate the turbocharger compressor outlet vacuum hose (Fig. 2) item # 6, remove the hose from the port. Use a cotton swab wet with water to clean inside the end of the hose, until all residue is removed. Use the dry end of the cotton swab to dry inside the end of the vacuum hose. Use a wet cloth to clean the vacuum hose port on the compressor outlet until all residue is removed. Reattach the vacuum hose to the compressor outlet vacuum hose port at the turbocharger.

5. Reinstall clean air hose

6. Verify that the symptom/conditions are corrected.
