Engine Controls - High Rpm Misfire

SUBJECT:
Slight Engine Mis-Fire Above 5200 rpm

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves replacing the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

MODELS:

2003 (PT) Chrysler PT Cruiser

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles built prior to January 22, 2003 (MDH 0122xx) equipped with a 2.4L Turbo engine and manual transmission or prior to March 18, 2003 (MDH 0318xx) for vehicles equipped with a 2.4L Turbo engine and automatic transmission.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Vehicle operator may describe a random or slight engine mis-fire when operating vehicle above 5200 rpm. There will be no DTC logged in the PCM. If there are DTC's present additional diagnosis should be done to determine the problem. This condition is caused by a internal hardware issue in the PCM.

DIAGNOSIS:

The repair procedure should only be performed if the vehicle operator describes, or the technician experiences, any of the Symptom/Conditions.

NOTE:
An updated J1962 cable has been released. This cable has a red colored connector at the DRBIII(R) connection. Use this cable whenever a flash is being preformed.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

NOTE:
Whenever a PCM/TCM is replaced or reprogrammed, the software in the controller and DRBIII(R) must be verified as having the latest revision level. If a controller software update flash is available, complete the flash and labeling requirement as directed in the appropriate service bulletin identified on TechCONNECT.

1. Replace the PCM, refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT or the 2003 PT Cruiser Service Manual (Publication No. 81-370-03061) page 8E-15.

2. Perform the Powertrain Verification Test VER-2. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT or the 2003 SRTA Neon Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures Manual (Publication No. 81-270-03014) page 302.
