Body - Power Liftgate (PLG) Erratic Operation

SUBJECT:
Power Liftgate (PLC) Service

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves replacing the PLC module.

MODELS:

2003 (RS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a power liftgate (sales code JRC) built on or before December 18, 2002 (MDH 1218XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The customer may describe that the PLC is not operating properly. This may be due to the PLC latch sticking in an unopened state. In this state the liftgate will not close during a PLC close cycle. The customer may describe that the PLC latch closes prior to the liftgate closing or the liftgate may rise during typical low speed driving maneuvers.

DIAGNOSIS:

Using the DRBIII(R), determine the part number of the PLC module. If the part number is 04686687AP or higher, no further action is necessary, this bulletin does not apply and further diagnosis is required. If the part number is not 04686687AP or higher, perform the Repair Procedure.

SPECIAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

NOTE:
An updated J1962 cable has been released. This cable has a red colored connector at the DRBIII(R) connection. Use this cable whenever a flash is being performed.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.

2. Remove left D-pillar trim panel from the vehicle. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT. Reference: Service Info, 23 - Body/Interior/Left D-Pillar Trim Panel - Removal.





3. Disconnect the wire harness connections from the PLC motor assembly (Fig. 1).

4. Remove the screw holding the PLC control module to the D-pillar (Fig. 1).

5. Remove the PLC control module from the vehicle.

6. Install the replacement PLC control module, p/n 04686687AP, on the D-pillar and install retaining screw. Torque the screw to 14.5 in. lbs (Fig. 1).

7. Connect the wire harness connections on the PLC control module. Be certain to slide connector locks to the locked position (Fig. 1).

8. Install the D-pillar trim panel on the vehicle. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT. Reference: Service Info, 23 - Body/Interior/Left D-Pillar Trim Panel - Installation.

9. Connect the negative battery cable.

10. Set the clock to the correct time.

11. Using the DRBIII(R), check and erase any PLC control module Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's).

12. Verify PLC system operation. Cycle the PLC through one complete open and close cycle, this will allow the PLC control module to relearn its cycle with the new components.
