Interior - Rear Seat Won't Recline or Fold Properly

SUBJECT:
Seat Recliner Cable Adjustment Procedure

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves adjusting or replacing the recliner cable on the seat.

MODELS:

2001 - 2004 RG Chrysler Voyager

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with rear bench seat (sales code CYS).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The vehicle operator may describe that the rear bench seat does not recline or fold as it should.

DIAGNOSIS:

The technician may determine that the rear bench seat recliner cable is out of adjustment.

If the vehicle operator describes or the technician experiences the Symptom/Condition, perform the Cable Adjustment Repair Procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED:

CABLE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the seat from the vehicle. Refer to the Owner's Manual for proper procedures.

2. Place the seat on a clean, suitable bench and remove the side shield on the left side (as it is positioned in the vehicle) of the seat (the side without the recliner handle).





3. Tip the seat onto the front edge of the seat cushion (Fig. 1).





4. Note which slot position the cable housing is currently in. Detach the recliner cable housing from the slave recliner assembly (leave the end of the cable attached) (Fig. 2).





5. Change the position of the recliner cable housing from the current slot position noted in Step # 4 to one slot closer to the first slot position (this should tighten up the cable) (Fig. 3)

NOTE:
If the cable is already positioned at the first slot position, the cable must be replaced. Proceed to Cable Replacement Repair Procedure.

6. Return the seat to the upright position on the work bench.

7. While on the bench, operate the recliner.

a. If the recliner operates properly, attach the side shield(s), install the seat in the vehicle and return the vehicle to the customer.

b. If the recliner does not operate properly and the cable housing is adjusted all the way to the first slot position, the cable must be replaced, proceed to the Cable Replacement Repair Procedure.

c. If the recliner does not operate properly and the cable housing is currently in the second, third, or fourth slot position, repeat Step # 3 through Step # 7 until the cable is in the first slot position.

CABLE REPLACEMENT REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the side shield on the right side (as it is positioned in the vehicle) of the seat (the side with the recliner handle).

2. Remove the center seat belt buckle anchor bolt (Fig. 1).

3. Release the J-Retainers on the backside of the seat cushion and carefully pull back on the seat cover to gain access to the recliner cable (Fig. 1).

4. Release the cable housing from the left side seat recliner assembly first (Fig. 3).

5. Release the cable end from the left side seat recliner assembly.





6. Release the cable end and housing from the right side seat recliner assembly (Fig. 4).

7. Remove the recliner cable.

8. Install the new recliner cable, p/n 05066625AA.

9. Attach the cable housing and cable end to the right side seat recliner assembly (Fig. 4).

10. Attach the cable end and then the cable housing in the second slot position to the le side seat recliner assembly (Fig. 3).

11. Attach the J-Retainers on the back side of the seat cushion.

12. Attach the center seat belt buckle anchor. Tighten the anchor bolt to 39 Nm (29 ft. lbs.).

13. Proceed to Step # 6 in the Cable Adjustment Procedure to check the recliner cable adjustment.
