Knocking Sound From Lower Steering Column

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves installing stainless steel interference ring to the lower steering shaft.

MODELS:

2004 (CS) Pacifica

2002 - 2003 (RG) Chrysler Voyager (International Markets)

2002 - 2003 (RS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The vehicle may exhibit a knocking sound coming from the lower steering column area.

DIAGNOSIS:
With the engine turned off, rotate the steering wheel clockwise and counter clockwise in a cyclical fashion using a small amount of force. Listen and feel for a knocking sound coming from the lower steering column area. If the sound is present, perform the Repair Procedure.

SPECIAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the steering column. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT or the appropriate service manual, Section 19, Column, Removal.

2. Place the steering column on a suitable bench.

3. CS vehicles proceed to step 6. RG/RS vehicles proceed to next step.

4. Remove the clock spring. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT or the appropriate service manual, Section 80, Restraints, Clock spring, Removal.





5. Remove the two fasteners securing the lower column mounting bracket (Fig. 1).





6. Using Miller Tool # 6831A, remove the roll pin securing the coupler to the lower steering shaft (Fig 2).

7. Slide the coupler off of the lower steering shaft.

8. Install the interference ring, p/n 05135259AA, over the notch in the lower steering shaft using the locating rib to align the interference ring in the correct position.

9. Slide the coupler onto the lower steering shaft by lining up the key features on the coupler and the lower steering shaft.

10. Using Miller Special Tool 6831A, install the roll pin to secure the coupler to the lower steering shaft.





11. Insure there is a tight fit between the coupler and the shaft.

12. CS vehicles proceed to step 15. RG/RS vehicles proceed to next step.

13. Install the lower steering column mounting bracket.

14. Install the clock spring.

15. Install the steering column assembly in the vehicle.
