Body - Sliding Door/Liftgate Erratic Operation

NUMBER: 23-041-02

GROUP: Body

DATE: Sept. 16, 2002

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING PROVIDED IN ADVANCE. THE MDS2 MUST BE OPERATING WITH CIS/ISIS CD2118 OR HIGHER AVAILABLE OCTOBER 14, 2002.

SUBJECT:
Power Sliding Door and/or Power Liftgate Will Pop Off but Not Power Open

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL IN STOCK VEHICLES BUILT BETWEEN NOVEMBER 1, 2001 (MDH110/XX) AND AUGUST 31, 2002 (MDH 0831XX).

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves flashing each Power Sliding Door (PSD) and/or Power Liftgate (PLG) module(s) and resetting obstacle detection values.

MODELS:

2002 - 2003 (RS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager

2002 - 2003 (RG) Chrysler Voyager (International Markets)

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

When opening the PSD and/or PLG using the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE), overhead console switch, or B pillar switch, the PSD and/or PLG may "pop off" but not power open. The power close feature will operate correctly.

DIAGNOSIS:

If the customer describes the above symptom/condition and the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is INCOMPLETE POWER OPEN - EXCESSIVE HALL EFFECT SIGNAL (active or stored), flash each PSD and/or PLG module(s) the vehicle is equipped with and reset obstacle detection values in each module flashed.

NOTE:
DTC "INCOMPLETE LATCH RELEASE - SECTOR GEAR RETURN FAILURE" (ACTIVE OR STORED) MAY OR MAY NOT BE PRESENT ALSO.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

NOTE: THE MDS2 AND DRB III(R) ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM PART OF THIS REPAIR. THE MDS2 SYSTEM MUST BE OPERATING WITH CIS CD2118 OR HIGHER.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Connect a battery charger and set as close to 14 volts charge as possible.

2. Log onto the MDS2 System.

3. Connect the MDS2 (Mopar Diagnostic System) and DRB III(R) (Scan Tool) to the vehicle and switch the ignition to "ON".

NOTE:
AUTO CONNECTION WILL OCCUR ONCE THE DRB III(R), MDS2 AND VEHICLE ESTABLISH COMMUNICATION. THE "CANNOT READ VIN FROM DRB III(R)" MESSAGE (ON THE MDS2) WILL BE REPLACED BY THE VEHICLE VIN. PRESS THE "OK" BUTTON ON THE MDS2 TO REQUEST A MDS2 SESSION FOR THE VEHICLE VIN INDICATED. PRESS THE "OK" BUTTON WHEN ASKED TO BEGIN SESSION.

4. Push the FLASH tab on the MDS2.

5. Select READ PART NUMBERS FROM VEHICLE and click SHOW UPDATES on the MDS2.

NOTE:
A MESSAGE MAY APPEAR (AFTER STEP 3 OR 4) THAT INDICATES NO UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE. IF THIS OCCURS, MAKE SURE YOUR DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT IS OPERATING AT THE LATEST SOFTWARE LEVEL AS LISTED EARLIER IN THIS BULLETIN. IF THE LATEST SOFTWARE IS INSTALLED, AND NO UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE, ANOTHER VEHICLE CONDITION EXISTS THAT WILL REQUIRE FURTHER INVESTIGATION.

6. Select the new software part number with the light pen and click UPDATE CONTROLLER SOFTWARE.

7. The MDS2 and DRB III(R) will prompt for any operator action needed during the remainder of the reprogramming process.

NOTE:
INSTRUCTIONS ON THE DRB III(R) SCREEN WILL ASK FOR THE IGNITION KEY TO BE TURNED TO THE "LOCK" POSITION, THIS MUST BE DONE WITHIN 15 SECONDS. SHORTLY AFTER THE IGNITION KEY IS PLACED IN THE "LOCK" POSITION, REPROGRAMMING WILL BEGIN. THE IGNITION KEY MUST REMAIN IN THE "LOCK" POSITION UNTIL THE DRB III(R) SCREEN ASKS FOR THE KEY TO BE TURNED TO THE "ON" POSITION.

8. If any additional PSD and/or PLG module(s) require flash update, repeat steps 5 and 6 for each additional PSD and/or PLG module(s) the vehicle is equipped with.

9. Cycle each PSD and/or PLG open/close three times. This will reset the obstacle detection values in each module.

10. Using the DRB III(R), clear any DTC's which were set during the flash process.

11. If the flash procedure fails to correct the PSD and/or PLG failure to move out of the primary latching position, replace the latch on that door.

POLICY:
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
