SUBJECT:
Scratching Like Sound From The Instrument Panel Area
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves adding a bypass hose to the front heater core coolant inlet and outlet.
MODELS:
2001 - 2004 (RS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager
2001 - 2005 (RG) Chrysler Voyager (International Markets)
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to left hand drive vehicles equipped with a 3.3L engine, sales code EGA or EGM, and air conditioning, sales code HAA, or HAD, built on or before July 6, 2005 (MDH 0706XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A scratching like sound coming from behind the instrument panel above 5,000 rpm during Wide Open Throttle (WOT) acceleration. The sound may be caused by coolant flow cavitation within the heater core.
DIAGNOSIS:
1. Check the coolant recovery bottle for proper level. Adjust as necessary.
2. Test drive the vehicle and listen for the sound at the instrument panel area. The sound is prevalent above 500 rpm just prior to the first to second, or second to third gear up shift when accelerating at WOT.
3. If the sound can be confirmed, perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
SPECIAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Open the hood.
2. Partially drain the cooling system to a level below the heater hoses, into a suitable clean container.
3. Cut the heater core inlet hose completely through 63.5 - 76.2 mm (2.5 - 3.0 in.) from the heater core tube end of the hose.
4. Cut the heater core outlet hose completely through 127 mm (5.0 in.) up from the return pipe.
5. Install the bypass hose, p/n 05179289AA, with the loop toward the right (passenger) side of the vehicle.
NOTE:
Be sure the bypass hose loop has sufficient clearance and does not come in contact with spark plug wires, other hoses etc..
6. Install the 6 in. piece of convolute, included in the hose kit, around the # 3 spark plug wire.
7. Properly position the heater hose clamps (4) with the 6094 heater hose clamp tool.
8. Fill the cooling system. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECT, under: Service Info, 7 - Cooling, Standard Procedure, Cooling System Filling.
9. Close the hood.
