Convertible Top: Description and Operation

POWER TOP - CONVERTIBLE

DESCRIPTION

The power top system allows the convertible top to be raised and lowered automatically by actuating a switch on the instrument panel. The power top system receives battery feed through a 40 amp fuse in the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), only when the ignition switch is in the ON position.

In each door there is a window regulator module directly connected to each of the front door window regulator motors. The window regulator module receives battery feed through a 30 amp fuse in the TIPM and then through an in line circuit breaker located on the wiring harness. The modules control window motor operation, smart glass functions and rear window operations. The driver window module controls the convertible top operations by supplying a ground signal to the motor/hydraulic pump relay.

The main components of the power top system are:
- The power top framework and bows (1)
- The motor/hydraulic pump assembly (2)
- The power top well (3)
- The power top pivot bracket (4)
- The latch system (5)
- The power top switch
- The window regulator modules

The power top motor is part of the motor/hydraulic pump assembly and cannot be serviced separately. If the motor is inoperative the complete assembly must be replaced.

OPERATION
The power top switch status is transmitted using CAN B message. When a top operation message is received by the driver window module, it will ground the respective relay control circuit which in turn will operate the motor. If the convertible top switch is pressed and held to the down position second detent, it will command both modules to drop all windows to the fully down position. The windows cannot be raised when the convertible top switch is in the top down position.

When the switch is held in the top up position and all four windows are fully up, the modules will lower the respective front window 40 mm (1.5 in.), lower the respective rear window for 0.52 seconds (approx. 55 mm (2in.)) and the driver window module will ground the top up relay control circuit. Once the top is back up the windows will not raise automatically. When the top switch is pressed in either position, the driver window regulator module will ground the respective relay control circuit for a maximum of 20 seconds. The window regulator module monitors vehicle speed and if the speed is over 15 mph, the top will not operate.
