SUBJECT:
Horn Activation Effort
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves installing a revised horn switch and rear steering wheel cover.
MODELS:
2006 (PT) Chrysler PT Cruiser
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles built on or prior to January 31, 2006.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The vehicle operator may describe extra effort is required to activate the horn.
DIAGNOSIS:
Ensure that the concern is not related to design change from a membrane horn switch under the airbag cover (used on previous model year PT vehicles), to a floating horn switch design that requires depressing/rocking the airbag module.
PARTS REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Use the procedures outlined in TechCONNECT 19 - Steering/Column/Steering Wheel/Removal to remove the steering wheel and then the horn switch assembly (contacts/pads) and the rear cover.
2. Discard the removed horn switch assembly and steering wheel rear cover.
3. Install the appropriate horn switch from the Parts Required listed above into the steering wheel as follows:
a. Starting at the connector end (1), place the connector at the 12 o'clock position and route the contact wiring counterclockwise around the wheel hub as shown. Make sure the wiring is routed that it does not interfere with any wheel mounted components.
b. Push each horn contact into its mounting hole.
4. Install the appropriate steering wheel rear cover from the Parts Required listed above onto the steering wheel
5. Install the speed control switch if equipped.
6. Use the procedures outlined in TechCONNECT 19 - Steering/Column/Steering Wheel/Installation starting at step 6 to complete the steering wheel installation.
7. Set the clock to the correct time.
