A/T - 904 Interchanging Late Parts

SIL: 88-5 (Feb.)

SUBJECT: CHRYSLER 904 Interchanging late parts

In 1986 Chrysler went to an electronically controlled solenoid for torque converter operation. Many parts are interchangeable with earlier years, SOME ARE NOT. The internal components, including gear train, clutch drums, and pump are interchangeable. An earlier valve body will work on '86 and later units, but is by-passing the electric controls. The earlier cases WILL NOT INTERCHANGE WITH '86 AND LATER UNITS IF THE LATER VALVE BODY WITH TCC SOLENOID IS BEING USED. The earlier cases do not allow clearance for the solenoid, and it is impossible to relieve case material to make it fit.
