Prior to strut mount replacement, follow the procedure outlined below to test strut mount vertical/lateral movement on subject vehicles equipped with single path strut mounts.

Strut Mount Vertical Clearance

1.. Position the vehicle on a frame contact hoist so that the weight of the wheel assemblies hang freely. This should allow the strut rebound retainer to contact the strut mount.

FIG. 1 - Strut Mount & Record:

2. Using a scale, measure the distance between the rebound retainer and the strut mount and record (Figure 1).
3. Lower the vehicle completely to the floor with the vehicle weight on all four wheels. Again measure the distance between the strut rebound retainer and the strut mount in the same location as in Step 2.

NOTE: DO NOT LEAN ON VEHICLE WHEN MAKING THIS MEASUREMENT.

4. The difference in the two measurements is the strut mount vertical clearance.

This difference should not exceed 1/2" (12.7 mm).

Strut Mount Lateral Movement

FIG. 2 - Lateral Movement:

1. With the weight of the vehicle off of the front wheels and wheel assemblies hanging free, measure the amount of lateral movement at the top of the rebound retainer by pushing on the strut assembly from under the fender. This measurement should not exceed 3/16" (4.8 mm) (Figure 2).

Consider replacing a single path strut mount only if it meets one or more of the following:
^ The vertical movement as described exceeds 1/2" (12.7mm).

^ Lateral movement exceeds 3/16" (4.8 mm).

^ The rubber in the mount has separated.
