SYMPTOM/CONDITION
A condition may exist in some early built subject model vehicles in which the straight section of vacuum hose (routed from the flow control valve to the intake manifold) may crack, resulting in a vacuum leak (Figure 1).
This vacuum leak may cause driveability problems including rough and poor idle, poor performance, engine surge, and poor fuel economy.
FIGURE 2:
Whenever the above driveability complaints exist on a 2.2L engine, the first diagnosis step should be to inspect the flow control valve hose for a crack. If a hose crack is detected, the flow control valve and both hoses must be replaced with Assembly PN 4213590, which has two 90~ molded rubber hoses attached to the flow control valve (Figure 2).
To preclude a car down situation while waiting for the required part, it is recommended each dealer order sufficient stock parts..
Do not replace a cracked hose with another piece of straight hose from bulk stock. Instead, replace the entire assembly because the molded hoses are required for proper routing.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
Parts Required:
1 - Flow Control valve Assembly PN 4213590
With Molded Rubber Hoses Attached
1. Remove carburetor air cleaner crossover and air inlet box assembly.
FIGURE 2:
2. Locate flow control valve (black and white) assembly. On the left side of carburetor between the intake manifold vacuum fitting and the carburetor main body nipple under the air horn (Figure 2).
3. Remove and discard the complete original flow control valve and hose assembly.
4. Install revised Flow Control Valve Assembly PN 4213590 with the white end of the valve toward the intake manifold fitting and the hose labeled "carb" installed on the carburetor fitting (Figure 2).
