This service is applicable to all 1982-1/2 and 1983 models built after March 15, 1982 (MDH 03-15-XX) equipped with a close coupled catalyst and 2.2L engine.
SYMPTOM/OONDITION
Subject model vehicles may exhibit an audible buzzing or light rattle emitting from the front (close coupled) catalyst at 1200 to 1500 rpm. This noise can be caused by the catalyst air injection distribution tube vibrating against the catalyst air tube adapter.
DIAGNOSIS
1.. Verify that the noise is not due to a loose underhood or underbody component.
2. After catalyst has cooled, tap lightly with a rubber mallet to verify rattle.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Remove air injection delivery tube from catalyst.
FIGURE 1:
FIGURE 2:
2. Insert a tapered pin or drift (see Figure 1) into the inlet fitting of the catalyst air distribution tube (see Figure 2).
Enlarge end of tube by striking the drift pin (caution should be exercised so as not to distort the the catalyst tube end) with a hammer until an interference fit occurs between the air distribution tube and catalyst air tube fitting (see Figure 2).
3. Reinstall air injection delivery tube.
4. Tap catalyst lightly with a rubber mallet to insure the rattle is not present.
5. If rattle is still present, repeat Items 1-4 until rattle has been eliminated.
