SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Some vehicles may exhibit a low-frequency chuckling noise from the front suspension on small bumps at low speeds. This noise may originate in the MacPherson struts. Replacement of the strut assembly will not eliminate the noise.

DIAGNOSIS

1. Verify that the noise is not due to a loose underhood component.

2. Road test over small bumps and/or expansion joints in pavement to verify noise.

PARTS REQUIRED

1 - Seat and Damper Assembly PN 4052736
One assembly per side

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Follow service manual procedures for the following operations:

1. Remove the strut assembly (s) using service manual procedures, making sure that camber positions are marked accurately.

2. Remove the strut upper retainer assembly and coil spring upper seat.

FIGURE 1 - SEAT & DAMPER ASSEMBLY PN 4052736:

3. Install new upper spring seat with damper assembly (Figure 1).

FIGURE 2 - PROPER SPRING SEAT INDEXING:

4. Reinstall strut assembly. Refer to Figure 2 for proper spring upper seat alignment to strut.
5. Return camber and toe to their original settings using "C" clamp to realign previously made marks on camber bolt and strut. Then torque the retaining bolts. Front end alignment is not required for this operation.

Refer to Technical Service Bulletin #02-08-82 for correcting strut chuckle noise on 1981 and 1982 models.

The new spring seat and damper assembly entered production on the 1983 "E" body vehicles approximately February 15, 1983.
