SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Customer concern of high shift effort on a subject model vehicle that may be due to a sticking shift cable or binding of the bellcrank at the transmission.

REPAIR PROCEDURE


1. Disconnect crossover and selector shift cables. Check the cables for free operation. Replace any cables that are kinked or sticking.

2. Remove pivot screw from bellcrank (Figure 1).

3. Remove and discard the top wave washer (Figure 1).

4... Remove bottom washer and inspect for
distortion and/or grooving.

Replace with Washer PN 6500814 if the washer is bent or grooved.
5. Clean and liberally lubricate all bellcrank bearing surfaces and the pivot bolt with Mopar Multi-Mileage Lubricant PN 4318062.

6. Reinstall the bellcrank assembly and torque pivot bolt to 70 ft.lbs. (95 N-m).

7. Reconnect cables and adjust as outlined in the 1983 Front Wheel Drive Service Manual #81-27-3003, pg. 21-44.

8. Road test and check gearshift linkage for shift quality.
