SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Transaxle shifter mechanism is inoperative/loose due to shift linkage disengagement.
DIAGNOSIS
Cable Linkage
Determine if the selector cable end fitting has popped off the ball stud at the transmission operating lever.
Rod Linkage
Determine if one of the white nylon rod end fittings has popped off its ball stud (see attached illustrations for locations).
PARTS REQUIRED
Ball Socket Retaining Clip PN 4340118
Number required:

5 1983-1984 Rod Linkage
3 1985-1986 Rod Linkage
REPAIR PROCEDURE
It will be necessary to install ball socket retaining clips to prevent ball socket disengagement.
1. Reinstall cable/rod end fitting over ball stud.

2. Snap ball socket retaining clip over end fitting and ball stud per Figure 1.
Insure that the clip's circular cutout fits completely around the ball stud rivet.

3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 until all white nylon end fittings identified in Figures 2-5 are clipped.
NOTE: CLIPS ARE NOT REQUIRED IF THE END FITTINGS ARE COLOR CODED BLACK.
