SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Grinding or ticking sound in speedometer area.
DIAGNOSIS
Road test the car to verify the condition.
NOTE: IF VEHICLE IS WARM (ABOVE 60 DEGREES) THE NOISE MAY NOT BE READILY APPARENT.
The noise may be caused by interference between the cable housing connector and the dash panel opening. Use the following procedure to correct the interference condition.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the speedometer cluster. (Refer to the appropriate 1983 service manual for Removal Procedure.) The printed circuit board may also need to be removed for drill motor clearance.
3.. Release the spring clip and push the speed-
ometer cable housing back into the instrument
panel housing far enough to prevent damage to
the cable during drilling or grinding. Cover
the cable housing to prevent chips from enter-
ing the cable.

4. Using the side of a 1/8" drill bit or small rotary file and an electric drill, enlarge the hole in the instrument panel to approximately 1" in diameter (see Figures). This will prevent the speedometer cable and instrument panel from amplifying speedometer cable noise.
NOTE: IF A REAMER IS USED TO ENLARGE THE HOLE, CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN THAT THE REAMER DOES NOT SLIDE OFF CENTER WHILE DRILLING.
NOTE: PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION NOT TO DAMAGE THE WIRING OR OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS DURING THE GRINDING OPERATION. DO NOT TRY TO USE A HOT KNIFE FOR THIS OPERATION.
Use a vacuum cleaner either during or after drilling to remove the plastic chips from the instrument panel.
5. Reinstall the instrument cluster.
NOTE: TO START, PULL THE CABLE HOUSING THROUGH THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAR ENOUGH TO ATTACH THE CABLE TO THE SPEEDOMETER BEFORE INSTALLATION OF THE SPEEDO CLUSTER INTO THE DASH PANEL. THIS WILL PROVIDE POSITIVE ENGAGEMENT OF THE CABLE INTO THE SPEEDOMETER HEAD.
6. Reconnect the battery and road test for proper speedometer operation.
POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty
